Sourdough Bread Variations
Sourdough bread is well loved for its tangy delicious flavor but it is also an amazing carrier of flavor.
Over the years I have spent time experimenting with some tried and true varieties and also some more unique one!
These different ingredients can be added to the original mixture, like if you’re doing a chocolate or cinnamon bread, or they can be added during the last shaping phase of bread formation.
Personally I love to add bulky items to my sourdough bread like cinnamon coated raisins or jalapeños and cheese! And these definitely work best being folded in at the last phase before baking.
It is also important to realize that adding anything to your sourdough mixture can throw off the balance and may make for a dense or shapeless loaf. That’s why it’s important to follow these recipes if you want the same fluffy amazing loaf just with some added pizazz!
Cinnamon Brown Sugar Swirl Loaf
In the last phase of loaf formation add ingredients mixed together and roll soo tightly before placing in a basket to rest before baking.
Ingredients:
1/4 c brown sugar
2 Tablespoons cinnamon
Jalapeño Cheddar Loaf
In the last stage of dough making, fold jalapeños and grated cheddar cheese into loaf carefully.
Ingredients:
One small can of Jalapeños drained
1 Cup packed grated cheddar cheese
Walnut Seed Loaf
To create a perfect seed loaf mix in nuts and seeds to first stage if our dough loaf making, after initially adding flour to the water and starter mixture.
This gives the seeds and nuts time to soften and meld with the dough.
I love to top with a generous amount of poppy seeds or sesame seeds!
Ingredients:
1/4 chopped walnuts
1/4 cup seed mixture - use a mixture of hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, poppy seeds, or whatever you have on hand!
Happy Baking!
